Although she does not have time to be interviewed, "Nurse Jenny" McGee has been moved by the messages she has received from New Zealanders.

Ms McGee made headlines earlier this week when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson publicly announced his thanks to NHS staff at St Thomas’ Hospital in London where he had been cared for after contracting Covid-19.

He singled out the South Island nurse and another nurse from Portugal as pivotal in his recovery.

In a message sent yesterday, Ms McGee, who is from Invercargill, said work commitments prevented her from an interview.

However, she did mention how the reaction from New Zealanders had affected her.

"I am so touched by all the messages from NZ and how proud NZ and Invercargill is.

"I unfortunately am not in the position to be giving interviews as I am consumed by my job right now."

Ms McGee’s father, Mike, confirmed earlier this week his daughter had worked at St Thomas’ for about eight years, and in that time had moved up the ranks to become a sister on the ICU ward.

Her family had believed she may have been nursing Mr Johnson, however she did not confirm it until she was outed during the leader’s thank you message.
