Loki can often be seen at the entrance to New World Wigram, where he is happy to be patted and has become a well-known icon.
His owner Jemma Geayley said he began visiting the shopping area three years ago.
“He loves attention and is always out looking for a pat," she said.
"He has only recently started to be fed [by community members].
"He’s always been big but more so now, so I prefer people don’t feed him so he still comes home for food.”
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board deputy chairman Andrei Moore said the poll to make Loki a local hero was “just a bit of fun.”
“Loki is just the best.’’
Said Ms Geayley: “I set up Loki the Wigram Community Cat Facebook page and was blown away by how big it’s become, it now has over 1000 likes."
