Police appeal for information after driver flees scene of fatal crash

Police are appealing to the public for information after the driver of a Nissan Navara fled the scene of a fatal crash at a Christchurch intersection last night.

The collision between a car and Nissan Navara happened at the intersection of Marshland and Mairehau Rds just before 7.30pm on Monday.

The sole occupant of the car died at the scene.

Police today appealed for sightings of the silver 2004 Nissan Navara in the area around the time of the crash.

The occupants of the Navara left the scene before police arrived and are still on the run.

"We are following strong lines of enquiry to identify and locate these people and encourage them to come forward to speak to us," said Canterbury district road policing mnager Inspector Natasha Rodley.

"Anyone who has any information that may assist is asked to call police on 105 and quote file number 210823/2767."

Rodley said the seious crash unit was called and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.

"This is a tragedy, and a reminder that deaths on our roads are preventable.

"Police remind people that any travel during Alert Level 4 should be for essential purposes only.

"If you are on the road, remember to slow down, drive free from the effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue, wear your seatbelt, and minimise distractions."
