Fire crews were still checking for hotspots on Tuesday night following a house fire near Kaiapoi.

Emergency services received multiple calls about the blaze at a property on Island Rd, Flaxton, at 8.40am.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Brodie Keay said he believes the fire has now been put out, and an investigation will get under way to determine the cause.

When crews arrived this morning they found the wooden house "fully involved" in flames. It has been badly damaged.

Two crews from Kaiapoi and tankers from Woodend and Rangiora attended.

Police initially closed Skewbridge Rd and Ohoka Rd at Mill Rd as thick smoke from the fire made driving dangerous.
