Carla Probst will never forget the first day of 2026 — not least because she spent part of it in labour in a helicopter.

The Queenstown woman began experiencing contractions in the early hours of yesterday before the hospital helicopter picked her up and transported her to Dunedin Hospital.

"There’s nothing quite like going into labour while you’re up in the air.

"You’re in a lot of pain and you just want the baby to pop out quickly."

Once they arrived at the Queen Mary maternity wing in Dunedin, Ms Probst said the staff were "absolutely lovely".

"They made it seem so easy. They were so thoughtful and the baby is so healthy."

Charlie Probst was born about 6.50am yesterday, weighing 3.9kg (8lb 9oz).

The whole sequence of events was still a bit of a blur for Ms Probst, as Charlie arrived a couple of days earlier than expected.

"So I celebrated my New Year’s Eve in labour."

It is Ms Probst’s second child — she and partner Jonas also have a 6-year old son.

He was "super excited" about the prospect of a new brother, Ms Probst said, although he was also "a little bit jealous I got to fly in a helicopter".

Her partner and son drove all the way to Dunedin Hospital.

"But it’s been such an exciting day.

"One day I’ll have a story to tell Charlie about his birth."
