Girls' High top Canterbury school at netball nationals

Christchurch Girls' High were the best performing Canterbury school at the national netball tournament in Nelson last week.

The South Island champions finished eighth at the New Zealand secondary schools' netball tournament, losing a nail-biter 38-36 to Epsom Girls' Grammar School at Saxton Stadium.

St Margaret's College were 10th following a 44-35 loss to Napier Girls' High School.

Villa Maria College finished 14th after going down 40-30 to Dunedin's St Hilda's Collegiate School.

Ashburton College avoided the wooden spoon and managed to hang onto 15th after a 33-30 win over Samuel Marsden Collegiate School.

The tournament was won by St Peter's School, Cambridge who beat St Kentigern College 35-31.

The tournament debutantes went through the week unbeaten and upset the more fancied Saint Kentigern who had beaten St Peter’s when the two teams met last month in the regional event.
