One dead after SH1 crash

One person has died after a crash on State Highway 1 in Canterbury this morning.

Two people were initially trapped after the two-vehicle crash on Main South Rd near Burnham just before 7.30am on Tuesday.

"Sadly, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

"One other person sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

"Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash."

Main South Rd was closed for a time as emergency services worked at the scene, but it has now been cleared and opened for traffic.

The police serious crash unit was also notified.

Fire and Emergency NZ said three crews responded to the crash.

The crews arrived at the scene to find two people trapped in separate vehicles.
