The quake at 1.49pm was centred 5km south-west of Christchurch near Halswell Junction Rd.
It was initially thought to be at a depth of 3km, but has since been reported as 7km deep.
It was classed as "moderate" strength.
A shopper in Riccarton Mall said walls shook and the quake sounded like someone jumping on the roof.
It was felt as far away as Auckland, according to GeoNet.
"Hope everyone who felt this is doing ok," NZ Civil Defence said in a tweet.
"It has been a rough few days for Canterbury."
More than 10,000 people have reported feeling the earthquake.
It follows a 4.2 jolt on Monday night in the city and a 5.5 shake in Fiordland earlier on Monday.
