A fleeing driver led police on a pursuit through Christchurch in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The chase started on Cobham St in Spreydon about 3.20am after the driver of the vehicle failed to stop when signalled to pull over, a police spokeswoman said.

The pursuit ended on Barrington St near Coronation St when police abandoned the chase.

The high number of police pursuits in Christchurch is a key reason for the introduction of the Eagle police helicopter, which started circling the city yesterday as part of a five-week trial

The police spokeswoman said the Eagle chopper was not involved in the incident.
