More than 50 events worth $30 million to the Christchurch economy have been confirmed for the new convention centre, which is set to open next year.

The Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is set to open its doors in October.

The New Zealand Dental Association, Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and Australasian Coasts & Ports have all booked conferences since ASM Global came on board as the venue operator.

General manager Ross Steele said the conferences will bring more than 28,000 people to the city.

"With most delegates spending an average of four days at a conference, and many choosing to include a component of pre or post touring, there are myriad opportunities for the city and its residents to benefit," Mr Steele said.

"Alongside the direct economic benefits to local and regional businesses across accommodation, dining, retail and transport – and the indirect benefits to their own suppliers – there are also social opportunities, which extend beyond the duration of each event.

"These include knowledge sharing and legacy impacts, which will benefit Christchurch well into the future."

Work is also under way to bring more than 120 other events to the centre, many of which will support the city’s key sectors.

Mr Steele said the company will undertake a massive local recruitment drive in the new year, which would provide a host of additional opportunities for Canterbury residents.

He said up to four new hotels are also set to open in Christchurch, which will bring their own economic benefits to the city.
