One person is in a critical condition after a worker cutting a pipe caused an explosion at a property near Christchurch this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident at a rural property on Pound Rd, Yaldhurst, at 11.30am on Thursday.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said a pipe being cut caused the explosion.

Two St John ambulances, a rapid response unit and a manager were called to the scene.
