A motorist has managed to escape her vehicle just before it plunged into a Christchurch river on Friday morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the woman crashed into the Avon River near the intersection of Avondale and New Brighton Rds about 6.15am.

"The only occupant had managed to escape before the vehicle went into the water," he said.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said the female driver was transported to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition.

The vehicle has since been removed from the river.
