Police have recovered a body believed to be that of a 50-year-old climber who did not return to Christchurch as planned after travelling to Mount Cook National Park.

Police said Petr Mandik had not been seen since travelling to Mount Cook National Park on Friday, December 13

Police this morning said a body was located at the bottom of the Haast Ridge yesterday afternoon where it was then recovered.

"While formal identification is yet to take place, police believe the body to be that of Mr Mandik."

His silver Nissan Tiida has been located at Tasman Valley carpark.

Mr Mandik had planned to walk Ball Pass Route to Haast Ridge, from there he would climb to Plateau Hut and on to Mount Cook via Zurbriggen Ridge before returning to Christchurch.

He did not make his flight from Christchurch Airport on Wednesday December 18.
