Schools keep tabs on spread of coronavirus

Ashburton College and schools around the country are being kept up to date with the country’s response to the coronavirus.

Advice is being offered on actions that need to be taken should the virus emerge in New Zealand and schools have the power to enforce a 14 day exclusion if there is a suspected case.

A letter from Ashburton College principal Ross Preece to parents said the exclusion would be enforced by the college "particularly if symptoms had emerged from a person travelling via China".

He asked parents and caregivers to call the student office to inform college of any student who is absent after having contact with someone confirmed with the virus.

"As always, anyone who is unwell should not be at school."

Mr Preece said two Chinese students due to return to Ashburton College this year were in "home lockdown" in China and waiting for more advice.

It was very much a wait and see situation.

Anyone with a particular concern about their child’s health should contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 or seek advice from a GP.
