The Waikari Hospital will celebrate its 100th birthday next year.

A sub-committee of the Friends of the Waikari Hospital, which has improved the facilities and provided extra comfort for patients since 1984, plan to mark the milestone on September 5, 2020, along with local community members.

A luncheon will be held at the Waikari Memorial Hall, with the hospital open for anyone who wants to walk through it in the morning.

The Friends of the Hospital have provided many extras for the hospital over the years, such as mattress underlays, outdoor sunshades, heat pumps and alterations to the lounge.

This year, the group bought two lounge chairs for patients and provided a new concrete outdoor area with seating for patients and family to enjoy.

The work on this area was done by local tradesman Ruckndig, Kelly Earl Builders and Geoff Olorenshaw, with all their time donated to the Friends. The group says it is grateful for the help.

New curtains are also on their way and will be hung in three of the permanent patients rooms. Friends were able to buy these with the help of a cheque given to them by Compass FM.

-The centennial committee is on the lookout for any information or memorabilia on the hospital/staff or patients for the 100th birthday celebration. Anyone who can help is asked to contact Sandy on (027) 3439921 or Michele (021) 0341632, or email waikarihospitalcentenary@gmail.com.
