Auditions for North Canterbury Musicals' production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat began last week.

The show is scheduled for next year, running from May 7 to 23.

The children's auditions were held first, from last Friday until Sunday; and adult auditions will be held next week, from Friday to Sunday, October 25 to October 27.

The auditions are being conducted by director Kirsty Allpress and musical director Gavin Hurley in the group's rehearsal rooms in Northbrook Rd, Rangiora.

The potential to discover new talent makes auditions an exciting part of the production process, Gavin says.

''I'm primarily looking for the ability to 'match pitch', or 'can you sing back to me the note I sing to you'?

''Then I'm looking for a reasonably strong head voice. Think Aled Jones singing We're Walking In The Air rather than Pink, although she is amazing,'' he says.

''Apart from that, I'm looking at intangibles. Engagement, enjoyment, focus, character.''

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on the biblical story of Joseph, found in the Book of Genesis.
