Canterbury boxers shine in the ring

The Canterbury boxing team came away from the national amateur championships in Hastings with six gold  and nine silver medals.

The medal haul at the busy four-day event earned the the 20-strong team more wins than any other.

Burnham duo Uila Mau'u in the 91kg elite category and Elenoa Lilio in the 81kg elite category each won gold.

Smiling Tigers prospect Daniel Meehan won gold in the 60kg junior category and was also named the most scientific junior boxer at the competition.

Woolston's Hamuera Tainui defended his national title by winning the under-63kg junior title.

Waikuku's Leon Gibson won the under-46kg junior title.

Smiling Tigers Kwahli Beauchamp won the under-40kg cadet title.

Woolston's Trevor Swainson earned silver in the elite 81kg class.

He also earned the Sonny Parker Tray as the best runner-up in the whole competition.

Smiling Tigers Sam Burdett-Clark earned silver in the under-64 kg elite class.

Papanui's Rendz Remaneses gained silver in the under-60kg elite category.

Burnham's Mel McGlynn was second in the under-69kg class.

12 Rounds boxer Bree Cumming won silver in the under-64kg elite category.

Woolston's Byron Antal gained silver in the 80-plus junior category.

Rangiora's James Charlton earned a silver medal in the under-66kg junior title.

Woolston's Ryley Sutherland was also second in the under-50kg cadet class.

Canterbury coach Mark Fuller was named the most scientific trainer.
