A window was smashed and the till was stolen in an overnight burglary at a popular central Christchurch café.

Two offenders wearing masks broke into Belle Café & Micro Roastery on New Regent St with a car wrench just before 4am on Tuesday, The Press reported.

They "yanked" the cash register free but there were only a few coins in the till, manager Casey Alderson told The Press.

"A café is not the best place to rob from because there’s not a whole lot of cash inside.

"But it took them embarrassingly long to smash through the window."

The café was open on Tuesday morning and the damage was being repaired.

Alderson said it would take a couple of days to replace the large glass panel in one of the doors.

The café is insured and has an alarm and security camera.
