Police have charged a 25-year-old who was arrested in Christchurch on Friday with the murders of two men at a Tauranga property.

The arrested man was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Saturday morning.

The man was arrested in New Brighton yesterday in an operation involving the Special Tactics Group, the Armed Offenders Squad and Investigations staff.

Two men's bodies were found on a rural property in Omanawa to the south-west of Tauranga on Tuesday after police received reports of multiple gun shots.

People who live nearby saw cars driving up the small gravel lane at great speed shortly before multiple shots rang out.

On Thursday night, officers chasing a vehicle along Carmichael Road in Tauranga were shot at. They were trying to stop the vehicle because they believed it was connected to the killings.

After a shootout, the offender was killed.

It's believed the man arrested and the man shot by police were known to each other.
