Picton: It’s getting further and further away

Measures will be taken to address mixed messages for motorists using State Highway 1 towards Picton after two signs in quick succession display the wrong distance to the destination.

Weedons resident Noel Kennard alerted Star News to a situation where three Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency road signs in close proximity indicate drivers have gone back in distance and then literally nowhere, in spite of the odometer recording 6.7km.

The first sign near Dawsons Rd indicates Picton 347km and can be taken as read, but 4km along the road towards Hornby (and Picton) the distance is now 398km.

Then 1.4km further down SH1, near Halswell Junction Rd, the journey length to Picton reverts to 347km, another miscalculation.

“It finally got the better of me. How can people get it so wrong?” said Kennard, who takes the route regularly to the city.

No specific individual was thrown under the bus, but Waka Kotahi network manager Canterbury Jessica McFarlane said the sign near Barters Rd, which states 398km to Picton, will be corrected.

The sign closest to Hornby that incorrectly displays 347km also needed to be amended.

“It was in place before the Roads of National Significance were in place so it needs to be reviewed since adjustments due to the Western Belfast Bypass reduced the journey distance,” McFarlane said.
