One dead in Canterbury crash

A person has died and two others were seriously injured after a crash in the Hurunui District.

Police said six vehicles were involved in the crash at Spotswood, just north of Cheviot, which happened about 4pm on Tuesday.

St John said four ambulances and three helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

One person was treated at the scene and five were taken to hospital.

Fire and Emergency NZ said its crews helped rescue passengers trapped inside one of the vehicles.

State Highway 1 remained closed last night between Spotswood and Cheviot.

“State Highway 1/Parnassus Rd is closed just south of Macmillan Rd, and motorists are asked to take alternate routes.”

A police spokesman said the serious crash unit was investigating.
