A Dunedin teenager has admitted threatening to blow up a Wellington mosque.

The 18-year-old was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in the Dunedin District Court this morning and admitted posting harmful digital communication.

His lawyer John Westgate indicated his client would be applying for a discharge without conviction.

Court documents revealed that on October 23, the defendant posted: “I am going to blow up Kilbirnie Mosque, 11 Queens Drive, Kilbirnie, Wellington”.

At the time the mosque had suspended all activities while the threat was investigated, The New Zealand Herald reported.

Police said the defendant was assisting with inquiries.

He would be sentenced in March and would be pursuing an application for final name suppression.
