A crashed cyclist found wedged beneath a parked car in Dunedin was transported to hospital with critical injuries.

How the man ended up underneath the stationary vehicle is unknown, but police say they are looking into the cause of the crash.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said police were called to Playfair St, Caversham, about 6.30pm yesterday.

A 52-year-old man was found ‘‘wedged underneath a parked vehicle after crashing his bike’’.

A scene examination was completed and inquiries were continuing as to the cause of the crash, which at this time was unknown, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one ambulance, a rapid response unit and an operations manager responded to the scene.

Ambulance staff treated one patient who was transported to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition, the spokesperson said.
