West Melton endurance motor-cycle racer Hamish Macdonald is on the cusp of a world title this weekend in the 125 Youth Cup class of the FIM Enduro GP World Championships in Europe.

The 20-year-old leads the series after two wins in the Czech Republic a fortnight ago and a strong finish in France this weekend could see him secure the title in only his second year in the class.

It also may leave Macdonald with the distinction of winning a world title before a New Zealand one having finished third at the national championships in 2017.

“Happy to get two more wins in the bag and taking the championship points lead into the final round in France,” Macdonald said.

Macdonald dominated the first two rounds of the series in Germany and Portugal in March and May respectively, a crash during the third round in Spain resulted in a broken scapula bone in the shoulder and broken clavicle put his title chances at risk.

Macdonald bounced back to finished second in a race in Italy during round five in June and now two race wins in the Czech Republic have him on the verge of a world title.

“The Czech Republic always looked like it was going to be a great event and after three days of walking tests it certainly was going to push us

“The enduro test – 10 minutes of roots and rocks.”

Macdonald said he felt the penultimate round would be crucial in deciding who wins the overall title.

“This would be where the event would be won or lost.”
