Award-winning art on display

Prize-winning "Kelliher" paintings will be showcased in Akaroa.

Sir Henry Kelliher was a longstanding patron of the arts and set up the Kelliher Art Award in 1956.

The objective of the competition, which lasted until 1977, was to encourage realistic portrayals of New Zealand’s landscapes and the ways of life of its people for the entire world to see.

The Kelliher Art Exhibition will be held at the Powerhouse Gallery from October 26 to November 24.

The paintings to be displayed in Akaroa are either Kelliher competition prize winners or paintings acquired by the Kelliher Art Trust.

It will be the second time in 63 years that a selection of his paintings has been shown in the South Island.

Among the artists to be exhibited are Peter McIntyre, Cedric Savage, David Barker, Austen Deans, Colin Wheeler, Robert McDowell and Richard McWhannell.
