A Canterbury primary school is mourning the "tragic passing" of a 10-year-old pupil who died after being hit by a car.

Alex Bennett was hit outside his home on Leeston Rd near Springston about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Alex was a pupil at Springston School. The school released a statement to parents on Thursday.

"With permission from the family I am able to share it is our beautiful Alex Bennett.

"Our thoughts are with Kylie, Guyan and their family.

"Our hearts go out to them, and we are so grateful for the kindness, support and love shown by our community as we navigate the tragic loss of one of our precious tamariki,” the statement said.

Springston School Board of Trustees released a statement on Thursday morning saying their thoughts were with the child's family.

Staff members and pupils were also being supported.

"We have had a tragic passing of a student of our school," the board said.

"We are unable to provide any further details at this point as the police investigation is continuing."

Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Peter Cooper told Stuff no charges had been laid as it was early in the investigation.

Their investigation into the circumstances of the crash was ongoing.

The crash occurred about 4km away from the school on a road with 100km/h speed limit.

Leeston Rd was closed between Goulds Rd and Bethels Rd for a time yesterday while the serious crash unit examined the scene.
