Tim Grocott replaces long-serving headmaster, John Laurenson, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

He begins his new role in January.

Mr Grocott is the current associate headmaster at the school. He was the former deputy principal of Burnside High School and a former staff member at Papanui High School.

"To now be the headmaster of that school that I went to that I've enjoyed working at, I'm just really proud to have that role.

"For me, I really want to ensure that we continue to provide really high-quality learning for the boys in eastern Christchurch and I think also just to make sure that we re-establish what the culture of Shirley Boys' is now that we're in a co-located environment," said Mr Grocott.

Mr Laurenson has been headmaster at SBHS for 23 years, leading the school community through its recovery from the February 22, 2011 earthquake. He indicated he would retire after he had settled the school into its new co-location site with Avonside Girls' High School at QEII last year.

He formally announced his retirement in August.

"Mr Grocott has worked hard over the last four years in the design and build of our new school and has good relationships with the key stakeholders in our community," said SBHS board of trustees chairman Tony Deavoll.

"He has a strong commitment to single-sex boy’s education and a great love for Shirley Boys’ High School, and we look forward to his leadership of our school over the next few years."
