A member of the public and a rescue chopper helped transport a seriously injured man to hospital after a crash near Arthur's Pass on Friday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the crash happened about 6.10am - 17km out of Arthur's Pass township.

The man, who was in a serious condition, was transported from the crash site by a member of the public to Arthur's Pass, he said. He was then flown to Christchurch Hospital.

"The member of the public did the right thing by taking them to Arthur's Pass because of the remote location the crash happened in," the spokesman said.

The man was transported to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition.
