The Pukeuri meat works near Oamaru processed a record number of cattle in the past season.

The Alliance Group announced the achievement for its North Otago plant on Wednesday, saying more than 71,000 cattle were handled there in the beef season that finished on September 30.

The record was the result of hard work and commitment from staff and from farmers who supported the co-operative, chief executive David Surveyor said.

It reflected significant investment in strengthening beef capacity at Pukeuri, and the increased livestock volume was also due to a strong focus on maximising manufacturing capabilities, he said.

The Pukeuri beef primary process was reconfigured to allow greater throughputs. Its co-products processing area was also upgraded and a new facility added to boost the recovery of products for sale to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

At its peak, Pukeuri employs more than 900 people.

''Beef is a growing part of our business,'' Mr Surveyor said.

''We are benefiting from strong demand ... from markets such as China and wider Asia, so the performance of Pukeuri is making a meaningful contribution to the co-operative and our global customers.''
