Members of the Dunedin Beekeepers Club were abuzz with excitement to celebrate a special anniversary.

Earlier this month, about 50 members of the club gathered to celebrate four decades of the club with a special cake.

Club secretary Chris Hinton said it was lovely to mark the occasion, which was "just another meeting but with cake".

"Our 40th anniversary was actually last year, but we forgot about it so decided to celebrate it this year."

Throughout its 41 years, the club had helped countless novice beekeepers begin the journey of keeping bees, he said.

There were about 180 members of the club who were a wide variety of people.

"We have retired people, university students, some younger ones who have an interest in bees.

"It is growing in popularity."

The club meets every second Saturday of the month for activities including training courses and mentoring schemes for novice beekeepers.
