Recycling chemical containers is now easier for Taieri farmers and contractors.

Last week Agrecovery opened its newest collection site at Farmlands Taieri.

There are now more than 80 sites throughout New Zealand as part of Agrecovery's initiative to help get plastic off the farm.

Agrecovery is a not-for-profit charitable trust which is funded by agrichemical, animal health and dairy hygiene manufacturers.

Shipping containers which have been transformed into recycling sites allow farmers and contractors to recycle chemical containers up to 60 litres free of charge, as long as the chemical was from one of the brands affiliated with Agrecovery.

Agrecovery operations adviser Isabella Shonakan said once the recycling station was full, the chemical containers would be taken and shredded, to then be transformed into underground cable cover.

''Farmers can be confident that what they are recycling is going to be actually recycled.''

She said it was important that before the containers were recycled they were triple rinsed to get rid of any residue.

''It's a good health and safety precaution to take for everyone involved.''

Miss Shonakan said Agrecovery planned to open another 10 recycling sites in the next six months.
