Being fully present in the moment benefits wellbeing

In the fourth of a five-part series on wellbeing and wellness with a rural focus, we look at "taking notice".

We have all heard of taking time to smell the roses or appreciate the little things in life. When we stop and are fully present in the moment, this has a direct benefit to our wellbeing.

Self-awareness and alignment to what is immediately around us can lead to behaviour changes and enhance our wellbeing.

Here are a few ways to help you achieve this.—

• Stop at the top of the farm and look down on what you see; be proud of your creation.

Notice the reflection on the sea, river or lake as you drive past.

• Stop on that bushwalk to notice the sights and sounds around you.

• Acknowledge someone’s lovely garden and tell them if you have a chance.

• Listen to birds singing in the morning as young hang out washing before you head to work.

• Admire your handiwork on the tractor as you watch the crops begin to grow.

• Cheer on someone you know in sport or a race.
