The hills are alive with the sound of ... dirt bikes.

The Eastern Hills Trail Ride, a major event on the fundraising calendar for the Waikouaiti School Friends of the School committee, will be held this weekend.

Committee secretary Sarah Smith said the trail ride will take riders through the undulating hill country of East Otago.

The trail ride would offer over 60km of tracks including a peewee track, a 4km junior track, 10km family loop and 41km main track with mixed terrain, and offer extra expert sections ``for those who dare!'' Registrations open from 8am and the tracks are open from 9am until 3pm.

``It's a great day out for dirt bike enthusiasts on private land that is not often open to the public. There is a mixture of terrain and tracks to suit all abilities — from learners through to the confident looking for a challenge,'' Mrs Smith said.

A lot of people from the wider community have got involved, and the committee was grateful to have some awesome local businesses sponsoring the event.

``Central South Island Helicopters and Anzco Foods have been a couple of major sponsors since we started the event three years ago, we really appreciate their support.''.

Profits from the event will go towards the students at Waikouaiti School, ``providing more resources for the increasing number of students at our school and helping fund more out-of-school experiences and excursions’’, she said.

The event starts at 850 Mt Watkin Rd, 12km inland from Waikouaiti, and will be sign-posted from the main road. Cost for an adult is $50, junior $20 and peewee $10. ``We will have hot food and drinks on sale and eftpos available,'' Mrs Smith said.
