Farmers entered gumboot territory over three days of glorious mud at the South Island Agricultural Field Days in Canterbury’s Kirwee. They came in droves and by the final count there were as many as 26,000 visitors, with fine weather following a wet start. There was no shortage of shopping bags being lugged around the site, but the true sign of the state of the rural economy will be after the event, when exhibitors clinch deals.
