Pooches are proving their talents extend beyond the paddock.

About 40 working dogs and their masters converged at the Gladstone Pub for the annual Mackenzie Young Farmers Bark Up on Saturday.

Event founder Hayley Johnson said the competition was well attended and had grown in popularity since the town's first bark up four years ago.

Since then, the event had also become more professionally run and support had increased, Miss Johnson said.

''Now it's getting more sponsors and more organisers,'' she said.

And, the event was also attracting a combination of repeat competitors along with new names in the lineup, which was pleasing for organisers.

''There is a chunk of them [who are] local shepherds, but [we are seeing] more new faces as well.''

Money raised from the event will go back to the young farmers group and possibly towards prizes for next year's event.
