Day-old chicks, fertile eggs and hundreds of poultry will be on offer at the Ashburton Fanciers Society annual Spring Poultry Auction in Ashburton this month.

''Ducks, turkeys, geese, bantams or guinea pigs ... there promises to be something for everyone. It's all in, everything goes,'' club secretary Brian Glassey said.

Including accessories: Chook Manor, of Little River, will be on site selling bits and pieces to help breeders, or people wanting to own chickens.

The club has a membership of 150 from around the South Island. Members and breeders will converge on the Sports Hall, in downtown Ashburton, for the busy auction day, which is open to members of the public too.

The birds will be sold in lots of about three or four, depending on the breeder.

And based on the society's autumn auction numbers, about 100 birds (in their lots) an hour could be sold.

Mr Glassey said Sussex, Australorp, Orpington, Wyandotte, Leghorn, silkies and Araucana were just some of the breeds likely to be up for auction.

Auction catalogues would be available for purchase, as well as food and drink.

There would also be some purebred eggs, sold by the dozen and priced from $6.

''The eggs will be priced by the breeders and timed for the auction.''

As well as the day-old chicks.

''It's a fun day. Even if you don't want to buy anything, come and have a look.''

The doors open for public viewing from 11am and the auction starts at 12.30pm.
