Alexandra's WoolOn Awards are being shifted to Cromwell.

WoolOn chairwoman Victoria Ravenscroft announced this morning the venue for the 2020 fashion show would be Highlands Motorsport Park, in Cromwell.

It follows the earlier cancellation of this year's Alexandra event due to venue issues, and subsequent calls from many in Alexandra for the event to remain in the town.

The event originated in Alexandra decades ago, as part of the Merino Shears, and evolved into WoolOn.

Ms Ravenscroft said in a press statement the WoolOn committee was "excited" about having Highlands as the venue.

"Highlands was very generous; the museum and motorsport park venue allows us the flexibility to combine grass roots wool craft and the glamour of a world class fashion design event."

She said the WoolOn team had "carefully considered" a wide range of venues within the region.

The WoolOn team had been able to honour the event's Alexandra roots by strengthening the partnership with Central Stories Museum, she said. Future opportunities were being planned for WoolOn Society members to access the historic garment collection and learn more about care and storage of wool garments, along with design and techniques through the years.

The 2020 WoolOn will be held on August 14-15.
