Judy Skevington is using her sewing skills for a good cause, close to her heart.

She is has been making mini gumboot and sheep dog decorations to use as a fundraiser and awareness initiative for Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury.

She is manager-rural connector at RST Mid Canterbury and wants people to have easy access to the RST numbers.

Mrs Skevington monitors the free and confidential 0800 phone line (0800 787-254), which is available 24/7. The trust can also be contacted by Messenger through Facebook, and via the RST website.

She answers calls and works with the caller to decide on the best action to take.

‘‘Sometimes that is to refer them to other professional services in the community,’’ she says.

‘‘Often all the person calling needs is for someone to listen so they are able to unload what is going on in their life. This is a free, confidential service.’’

Mrs Skevington, who hails from a farming background and owns a cropping farm run in partnership with her son, is able to draw on a variety of life experiences in her role.

And she is not the only one. There are scores of others within the trust who make themselves available to help.

RST offers free and confidential services to people in the rural community and can help in matters arising from climatic, environmental or financial issues to human resources, relationships and personal circumstances, or even if people find themselves in an overwhelming situation.

It is also on hand if people just need to talk or need a sounding board on rural matters.

The felt decorations were an idea adapted from another RST’s crochet gumboots.

Mrs Skevington has attached to the mini decorations an RST business card with contact details.

The dogs, which have a hanging loop or clip option, cost $8, while the gumboots are $6.

They can be hung on office noticeboards, on fridges, cupboard handles or wherever they are easy to see, when needed.

They are a fun way to promote RST and make sure people have access to those details when they need them. She said $5 from every decoration will go to RST Mid Canterbury.

The decorations will be available at any RST event or by contacting Mrs Skevington.
