Q. I see you are an organiser of the Maheno School annual clearing sale at Maheno Rugby Grounds at 11am on Friday, November 18. How is it going?

There’s been good entries so far.

Q. What sort of items do you usually get?

Bits and pieces, calf feeders, fencing gear, gates and motorbikes. Sometimes there’s trucks, cars and tractors — all sorts of things.

Q. Does the school get all the takings?

Anything sold has a 10% commission — the school gets 5% and PGG Wrightson gets 5%. It’s a huge job and we appreciate the work PGG do. There is an option of the vendor to give all of the sale price to the school.

Q. How much are you hoping to raise and what will it be spent on?

We appreciate anything we get. We seem to get between $3000 and $6000, and this year it is going towards upgrading the playground.

Q. What else can people expect on sale day?

There’s a barbecue, a coffee vendor and pupils sell raffle tickets. It’s a really good way for the school community to get to know the wider community and for the wider community to support the school — it’s an awesome day. I’d like to acknowledge the rugby club and the dairy farm for letting us use their facilities and First Security for patrolling the gear, which gets laid out the day before. We get a lot of help from the community.

Q. How many years has the sale been going?

About 10 years.

Q. How long have you been involved?

About seven years, in different roles including as an organiser the last five years — it’s fun. My youngest Holly goes to high school next year so this year is my last hurrah.
