Reporter Shawn McAvinue speaks to New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association team member Lloyd Smith, of Palmerston, about Australia retaining the Wayleggo Cup.

Q. How did it go?

It didn’t go that good. It seemed to suit their dogs better than ours.

We struggled a bit. We thought the hoggets would have suited our dogs but they stood up to us and confronted our dogs but they seemed to work better for the Australians for some reason, which wasn’t ideal. While we were having trouble getting them going and pulling them home and driving them, they actually worked well for their dogs, which was surprising and quite alarming, really.

Q. Bugger.

That’s what we thought too. They were just better than we were.

Q. In hindsight, would you have done anything differently?

The preparation was all there but the second day didn’t go our way.

Q. The New Zealand team will have to win the cup in Australia next year?

We have won it over there before. I was in the team that went over and won in 2010. Usually it is a lot easier to win it in New Zealand but it didn’t work out that way this year. Congratulations to them, they deserved to win it. We just weren’t good enough.
