Christchurch Boys’ High School is the first winner of the new Canterbury Clash of the Colleges competition at the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch.
The winning team was Matt Hickman, Jim Dickson, Riley Clisby and Blake Booth in a field of 112 students competing from 13 schools.
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s Isabella Wyllie, Annabelle Stalker, Lucy Moffatt and Gemma Beckett finished second and Geraldine High School’s Jacob Aitkinson, Royden Barnett, Charlie Drysdale and Bailey Nicholls were third.
Other spot prizes were awarded to Geraldine and Oxford schools for positive attitudes, teamwork and manners at the modules.
Teams of four from Cheviot to Geraldine competed in 15 modules, ranging from identifying animal anatomy, condition scoring sheep, wool classing, identifying seeds and weeds, applying drench and putting together a shearing hand-piece and more.
The Clash also had a sports focus, with gumboot throwing, egg throw and catch, and wool fadge races.
Associate Minister of Agriculture Meka Whaitiri and National’s acting agriculture spokesman Todd Muller awarded the prizes.
The Gumboot Toss winner was Tom Frame from Christchurch Boys’ High School.
