Allied Press business and rural editor Sally Rae has won the Rural Women New Zealand journalism award.

The award was established to recognise the important contribution women make in rural communities.

Entries in this year’s award had to include two articles broadly based on the theme of ‘‘rural women making a difference’’.

Ms Rae’s entries were on Central Otago women Emma Crutchley, Frankie Hore and Kelly Heckler, who believe the Upper Taieri could become a world leader in freshwater management; and Sarah Elliot and Juliet Gray, two of the founders of the Hakataramea Sustainability Collective.

Ms Rae received the award at the NZ Guild of Agricultural Journalists’ annual awards dinner in Wellington last night.
