Some female farming X-factor has led to St Hilda’s Collegiate School jointly winning an agriculture contest, herding the boys into the back paddock.

Year 12 students Sophie Cameron, Isla Wilson, Ella Nichol and Emily Cleghorn finished first-equal in the senior competition at the Otago Southland Clash of Colleges earlier this month alongside Blue Mountain College.

The farming contest was held at Southern Institute of Technology’s Telford campus. More than 260 students from 19 schools across the regions competed in 17 hands-on modules within a 90-minute timeframe.

Isla said the win was extra special because they were the only team from an all-girls’ school.

"It felt really awesome to beat some of those boys’ schools."

Having grown up on Central Otago and Southland farms, the girls knew what they were talking about.

"A lot of stuff is ... built on knowledge you already have."

Nonetheless, they had not expected to win.

"We were all shocked."

The girls were all keen to work on farms in the future.

The modules at the event included meat cut identification, pest control and motorbike safety.

All of the teams received a tour of the Telford campus during their visit.

Tokomairiro High School won the junior title and Catlins Area School the intermediate category.
