Waimate High School pupils Eliane Craig, Charlotte Hurst, and Ruby Shortus are the AgriKidsNZ Aorangi winners.

They finished top of the record 50 teams seeking the title at the Waimate show grounds on Saturday.

''This will be our third time at grand final,'' Ruby said.

The Mt Somers Springburn School trio of Lachlan Rooney, Ruby Giera and Annabel Harmer was second, and Ashburton Intermediate School's Austin Watson, Henry Gray and Tim Cannely-White were third.

All three teams will represent Aorangi at the national final in Invercargill in July.

Competition co-ordinator David Highstead said the event aimed to get young people excited about careers in the primary industries.

The showgrounds were teeming with the entrants and their supporters, with competitions divided into several rounds to cater for the high number of participants.
