The tight-knit community of rural Milton is staying silent following the death of a local veterinarian in a suspected homicide on Friday.

Bunches of flowers were laid at the foot of a sign reading "The Country Vet" outside the Crichton home of Jillian Clark at the weekend, but people in the area and in the wider Clutha community declined to talk about her or what happened at her farm on Friday.

The police investigation continues today as a death notice from Dr Clark’s family mourns her as being "tragically taken from us".

Police were called to the property on Friday night, where they found Dr Clark dead and a man in a critical condition.

Dr Clark and Malcolm Duff are listed as the occupants of the Adams Flat Rd property.

The man was flown to Dunedin Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition last night.

Stuff reported a family member confirmed the critically injured person was Dr Clark’s partner.

Police confirmed on Saturday the incident was being investigated as a homicide.

Asked if any charges had been laid in relation to the case, a police spokeswoman last night said they had no significant updates to share.

Police have placed cordons in and around the property where the incident took place.

Police could not comment on the nature of the man’s injuries at this stage, she said.

Dr Clark is understood to have recently started her own business after having worked for Clutha Vets for more than 30 years.

Clutha Vets management did not respond to requests for comment.

Several other community members approached yesterday, including those who said they knew Dr Clark personally, declined to comment.

A police presence remained around the farmhouse at the weekend, including a police tent that has been erected on site.

A scene guard was present on Saturday.

Police tape could be seen on the front gate and the house appeared to be cordoned off from large barns towards the rear of the property.

Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale said the Crichton community could expect to see an increased police presence in the area while police inquiries continued, but there was not believed to be any ongoing risk to public safety.
