Lay of the land

Southland town Riversdale has been selected to host the 2029 World Ploughing Championship. Shawn McAvinue asks people working in Riversdale if they think the town is up to the task.

Matt Meijers, of Gore. Electrician.

"I think so. All the locals will get behind it. The wider community gets behind these types of events in Southland and help out and do what they have to do to get things going. People all over Southland will be itching to join in."

Jan Hamilton, of Riversdale. Manufacturer.

"Of course. It’s what the locals do. The events they’ve run here over the years, including the centennial in 1972 to raise funds for the new community centre, was just amazing."

Leanne McDowell, of Waikaia. Office administrator.

"I reckon. It is good for little businesses and if it has the right committee to get the job done, I think it will be amazing."

Richard Clarkson, of Riversdale. Mechanic.

"Yeah. It will need a good committee and help of surrounding towns to house the people. They’ll handle the event but it will be the infrastructure to house and feed them."

Vaughan Greig, of Te Anau. Truck driver.

"I’m sure that it’s up for it but where people will stay will be the biggest problem. I suppose people will stay in surrounding areas and the farming community will host people in a spare room to make it work."

Murray Gerken, of Riversdale. Retired.

"I reckon. It’s not far from Balfour, Gore, Invercargill, Lumsden, Waikaia and Winton for back-up accommodation."
