A call is being made for farmers to attend a field day in Central Otago and benefit from free advice on how to improve the profitability of a beef herd.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand and NZ Herefords will host the Power of the Beef Cow Field Day on Matakanui Station, near Omakau, next week.

The 8700ha station, owned by Andrew and Tracy Paterson, runs about 22,000 fine wool sheep and about 1300 Hereford cattle.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand extension manager Dean Sinnamon, of Oturehua, who is helping organise the event, said the aim was to "get a next-level performance out of your cattle".

He would talk about the development of the station and its stocking policy.

Four other speakers will discuss ways to boost the profitability of cattle within a farm system.

They include agricultural consultant Phil Tither, of Hastings, whose clients include Matakanui Station, and vet and Angus and Hereford stud owner Dave Warburton, of Manawatū, who will both discuss the benefits of hybrid vigour.

Vet Charlotte Westwood will speak about the importance of correct nutrition to target growth and intramuscular fat in cattle and how to best feed cattle to target the premiums paid by meat processors.

Alliance Group livestock general manger Murray Behrent will talk about international beef market trends and the impact beef programmes, such as Alliance’s 21-day and 55-day Handpicked, were having on the weekly beef schedule.
