Mr Hanson has worked extensively in primary industry policy as an analyst, adviser and manager.
He joins NZPork from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), where he was part of a team providing strategic policy advice, primarily focused on supporting sustainable and inclusive growth of the food and fibre sector.
Before MPI, he worked for Federated Farmers, which included four years as the organisation’s industry policy manager.
"New Zealand pig farmers are the best in the world at what they do. I’m passionate about helping the sector to grow and meet future challenges," he said.
"An increasing number of Kiwis now know that more than 60% of pork consumed in New Zealand is imported, with much of it produced using practices illegal in this country.
"I’m thankful for the opportunity to join NZPork to help support farmers at such an important and changing time for the sector."
NZPork chief executive Brent Kleiss said Mr Hanson’s appointment came at a critical time for the industry.
"Our sector is facing a raft of regulatory challenges which threaten the viability of New Zealand’s pig farms. This includes the draft code of welfare and the new national policy statement on highly productive land.
"As imported pork produced to lower standards floods the country, it’s vital we have the right policy settings in place to ensure New Zealand has a thriving and sustainable pig industry."
