The Waitane Young Farmers Club will celebrate its 70th anniversary next month.

It will host a bring-your-own picnic on November 13 at the Southern Field Days site at Waimumu.

Committee member Zac Thomas said members were excited to finally host the event after the setbacks of lockdown.

‘‘Planning has been in the process for a year and when we were about to get things sorted lockdown happened. So finally we have been able to regroup and make sure everything complies to the Level 2 rules.’’

The club was formed in November 1951 and merged with the Waitane Country Girls Club in the early 1970s.

‘‘We are excited we have lasted 70 years. It is quite a big achievement for a local group to last this long.’’

The picnic event would feature a few games, a ceremonial cake and a history display of the club’s memories, Mr Thomas said.

‘‘There will be photos and old trophies. It will be a family event.’’

The event was the perfect opportunity for former and present members to get together and share stories, Mr Thomas said.

‘‘A lot of the families who have been a part of the club are third and fourth generations and it’s now the fifth generation who are coming through TeenAg.’’

The club had about 12 members from the surrounding areas.

‘‘We have a mix of young professionals within the rural sector who do a diverse mix of jobs. There are farmers, teachers, vets and representatives for different companies.’’

The club was looking forward to helping with the Otago-Southland regional final of the FMG Farmer of the Year contest at the Southern Field Days next year, Mr Thomas said.
