Ram fetches $15,500

A Perendale ram topped the Gore ram fair last week.

The ram, bred by Robert Gardyne, of Klifden Perendale Stud, sold for $15,500 to farmers Warren Ayers, of Mimihau, and Dave McKelvie, of Wyndham.

‘‘I knew he was a good ram, but you just don’t know what will happen on the day,’’ Mr Gardyne said.

A Torresdale stud Suffolk ram, bred by the Lindsay family, of Isla Bank, was sold to Garth and Chris Shaw, of Wharetoa Genetics, Clydevale, for $5000.

PGG Wrightson Genetics representative Callum McDonald said sellers came from as far afield as Otorohanga in the North Island and Stoke, Nelson for the two day, multi-vendor sale.

‘‘It was a reasonable turnout and the top rams were sought after, selling really well,’’ he said.

‘‘I would have liked to see a better clearance, especially the way the industry is.’’

He said there were a few more ram sales to go.

‘‘On-farm sales are going really well.

‘‘Everyone seem to be reasonably happy,’’ he said.
